Sustainability X Education Dr. Hameed Visits Department of Education, NUTN

On November 4, National University of Tainan welcomed Dr. Suraiya Abdul Hameed from the University of Queensland for a lecture titled "Sustainability X Education: Experiences from Southeast Asian societies." Dr. Hameed's presentation showcased her profound insights and extensive experience in educational leadership, emphasizing the necessity of cross-cultural understanding and communication in sustainable education. Her perspectives not only offer practical guidance for educators but also provide valuable directions for establishing more sustainable educational systems.

Dr. Hameed specializes in educational leadership, global policy, and issues of equity, inclusion, diversity, and culture in education. Her research includes a comparative analysis of global citizenship education in schools in Singapore and Australia, which earned her the N.V. Varghese Prize for Comparative Education in 2020. A multinational educational research project, jointly executed by Dr. Hameed, Associate Professor Yu-Chih Li from University of Tainan, and Dr. Jack Tsao from the University of Hong Kong, fosters international collaboration in the field of primary and secondary education research and offers rich networking opportunities for international educators and school leaders.

In her lecture, Dr. Hameed examined how the Southeast Asian education systems can maintain local cultural integrity while achieving sustainable development in tfacing globalization challenges in the post-pandemic era. Grounded in research on global citizenship education, the International Baccalaureate curriculum, and student well-being, she illustrated how schools can adapt and innovate while preserving cultural sensitivity and educational quality. Dr. Hameed indicated that a hybrid educational model, integrating global competencies with local wisdom, is emerging, which not only cultivates learners' international perspectives but also enhances individual well-being and collective environmental responsibility, thus maintaining competitiveness in a rapidly changing society while addressing local needs and upholding high educational standards.

During the lecture, Dr. Hameed provided an in-depth analysis of the challenges posed by globalization and offered new directions for balancing global perspectives with local cultures. National University of Tainan actively responds to these insights by vigorously promoting international exchange and EMI courses, aimed at enhancing students' global outlook and strengthening cultural inclusivity and diverse education to cultivate globally aware citizens. Concurrently, the University is committed to expanding digital learning platforms, integrating technology into innovative teaching, and fostering sustainable development in education across Southeast Asia and beyond. These initiatives not only align with global educational trends but also deeply resonate with local cultural needs, establishing a model for the academic and educational fields and demonstrating National University of Tainan's foresight and ambition in sustainable education.
